Vehicle Detail

Gm supported the automotive manufacturers association (AMA) ban in the 1960′S by only using it’s 400 cubic inch and larger engines in full size car’s and Corvette’s. Through the central office production order system (COPO) Chevy product guru, Vince Piggins, found a loophole with the ban, and created the ultimate Camaro – The legendary ZL1.

It was an outrageous idea, so outrageous that it met fierce resistance from inside General Motor’s as soon as the idea was raised: a short production run of 1969 Camaro’s equipped with the all aluminum 427 ZL1 engine. The 427 was never intended by Chevy’s top brass for street duty, but Piggins wouldnt take no for an answer. Corporate policy was circumvented and the 69 ZL1 achieved near mythical status for being one of the most ass kickingest machines to ever roll out of Detroit..

Most ZL1/ COPO Car’s have plain bodies. Of the 69 COPO ZL1 Camaro’s built. Two were ordered with the Rally Sport (RS) Appearance package, vinyl top, and 427 badges. One of those two Camaro’s, car # 55 was featured in the 2008 Mecum Spring Classic Auction as an unrestored original with only 7,700 miles. It is that car that was the inspiration for this tribute 1969 ZL1 Camaro.
